Financial Aid for Purchasing Food Supplements and Medications
Medication is an integral part of the lives of patients suffering from Cystic Fibrosis as they are required to take about 50 tablets per day. Without medication, their digestive and respiratory system cannot function properly and they quickly suffer from malnutrition and chronic lung infections.
When a certain medication is not included in health care packages, its price is extremely high and many patients cannot afford the expense which is added to of other costs of treatment such as inhalation machines, daily physiotherapy treatments, nutritional supplements and enriched food.
One of the problems facing CF patients is the lack of digestive enzymes, created due to a blockage of pancreatic valves. CF patients are unable to provide the amount of calories their bodies need the way healthy people do.
In order to maintain the correct body weight and the proper functioning of all bodily systems, children with CF must regularly consume food supplement which are rich in calories and suitable for drinking or administration via the “gastro- stoma” (an opening in patients stomach with a tube leading to the stomach). Enriched food supplements are an integral part of treating the disease and are recommended by expert doctors in the fields of CF and nutrition.
The cost of food supplements is approximately 200 NIS per month per patient (50 USD). The overall costs of treatment of CF patients can amount to thousands of dollars per month. Many families are unable to afford such food supplements and are therefore in need of financial aid from the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation of Israel.
The CFFI seeks funding in order to extend its assistance to an additional 150 patients, targeting children from underprivileged families. These funds will enable the CFFI to assist these patients in purchasing medications not found in health care packages and of food supplements.
