Life Saving Treatment – Lung Drainage
The main cause of death amongst CF patients is the eventual collapse of the lungs. Therefore, treatment of CF patients focuses primarily on lung problems.
Lung Drainage Therapy has been proven to be one of the most essential, life-saving treatments for CF patients. It is also the most dominant component of CF patients’ daily treatment as it helps clear the breathing passages which in CF patients become constructed by excess phlegm that the body is unable to clear on its own.
The most basic method used in Lung Drainage Therapy is a form of physical treatment in which the child lies down in a certain position and is “clapped” over the area of the lungs by the person administering treatment. Physiotherapeutic Treatment takes an even more active form of treatment that includes breathing exercises with the help of special breathing equipment.
These methods help remove much of the phlegm that accumulates in the lungs of CF patients. Parents of children with CF are instructed by the CFFI’s physiotherapists in the implementation of lung drainage and “clapping” for home treatment of phlegm removal. Most treatments which take place in the home are administered by family members or other non-professional caretakers.
This physiotherapy project aims to meet the physiotherapy needs of two populations:
- The general population of CF patients who come for monthly treatments and supervision at the foundation’s CF clinics each of which employs a physiotherapist. As the Ministry of Health does not cover the cost of para-medical personnel at our clinics, the foundation fills this gap and employs the physiotherapists directly. Our physiotherapists are tasked with assessing the needs of each patient, deciding on a course of treatment, carrying out respiratory physiotherapy for lung drainage and training patients and their families in repertory drainage techniques.
- Children from underprivileged families who cannot afford lung drainage therapy. This category includes close to 100 children who are dependent on the financial aid made available by our foundation. Without our ongoing support the health of these children will deteriorate rapidly.
