Multidisciplinary CF Clinics in Israeli Hospitals
Since Cystic Fibrosis is a multi-system disease that affects various bodily systems such as the repertory and digestive systems. Thus, it necessitates a multi-disciplinary approach to treatment. Research has shown that effective treatment of Cystic Fibrosis is achieved by close cooperation between all health professionals treating a single patient in a specialized CF clinic.
The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation of Israel founded and operates six multi-disciplinary CF clinics located in hospitals throughout Israel. These clinics were established in order to facilitate effective cooperation between all relevant caregivers whose input is necessary for the treatment of patients suffering from Cystic Fibrosis.
By adopting a holistic approach to the treatment of CF, our clinics ensure that all CF patients in Israel receive the best medical treatment possible. In addition, our clinics have eliminated the need for patients to coordinate their treatment between many different professionals in different locations. The CFFI’s six CF clinics provide the only in-hospital comprehensive treatment of its kind for CF patients in Israel.
The advantages of multi-disciplinary clinics, which have been documented in clinical research, can be identified in their ability to offer a comprehensive assessment of the patient’s health by a joint medical and Para-medical staff. Such collaborations within the staff more precisely reflect the patient’s situation and specific needs and result in an increased quality of life and heightened life expectancy. In the words of Prof. Eitan Kerem, former head of the European Foundation of CF and currently the director of the CF clinic at Haddassah, Mount Scopus: “Cystic fibrosis is a complex disease that requiring a holistic approach to treatment. Center care by a team of trained and experienced health professionals is essential for optimal patient management and outcome. Specialist care in dedicated CF centers is associated with improved survival and quality of life”.
The multi-disciplinary staff at each of our six clinics includes:
- Physicians specializing in CF (lung, gastro and hematology specialists)
- Clinical nurses
- Social workers
- Lung-function- and a perspiration analysis technician.
The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation of Israel directs and funds the activities of the para-medical personnel at the CF clinics. The standards for our clinics follow the European protocol, established through tracking and research of all multi-disciplinary functions necessary for treatment of CF. We also maintain a widespread network of professional ties with similar organizations abroad, with pharmaceutical companies and with other supporting agencies. The CFFI is currently the vanguard of knowledge, treatment methods and support of CF patients in Israel.
